Daily Wear: LBD for a Waterworks Presentation

IMG_0841
Today was a horribly rainy start to the day...the weather was a perfect portrayal of a few old friends' and some acquaintances emotions.  A dreary, rainy day-setting the tone for what was already a pretty depressing morning ahead of us.

I'd like to think I don't always dress this "BLACK" even though I have a closet full of black clothing.  The reason I'm wearing a classic Little Black Dress is because I had a funeral/memorial service to attend this morning.   It's always best to go classic and chic for such a somber occasion.  Am I right?

These types of situations are always tough, I find them extremely saddening, especially when I see the overwhelming despair tugging at the heart's strings of the deceased one's family members.  Really really heartbreaking, and we all know I'm not one to get too emotional...but these things--gah!  They're the worst.  My eyes well up with tears, I struggle to not blink (for fear those watery eyes will give way to real tears--thank god for classic Maybelline Waterproof Mascara!), and I get that burning feeling in the back of my throat as I keep myself from crying.

So while I may not have been the closest of friends to him, I know I shared my first 3years of living in NYC with this guy.  He was my first roomate in NY, living with him was a constant party....laughs, good times, nothing but hilarious memories.  Even when he'd piss me off by eating my packed lunches sometime in the middle of the night--I really don't have anything negative to say about him.  If it were not for this guy, I would not have forged some of the best friendships of my life--he introduced me to a wonderful group of his friends to which about 3-4 of them to this day are really dear to me.

So former roomate of mine, I hope you rest in peace...while you were taken from your friends and family way too soon, you will always be remembered in my mind for the vigor and zest you had in your every day living....I will never forget how much fun it was to live with you, all the late nights out when we don't even remember getting home, and stupid things like the rainy Memorial Day when we had a George Forman-BQ in your bedroom because it was too wet to grill outside.  Or the one too many times you tried to make-out with my friends--all I know is these thoughts bring laughter to an otherwise sad moment in time.  I'm certain others will miss you tenfold more than I will, but nonetheless you've made a dent in my life, you'll always be remembered--and you'll forever be my first roomate in NYC. (that's a role that packs a lot of punch in my life)
LBD
So yeah, sorry to be such a Debbie-Downer today...but its a Debbie Downer kinda day.  And sorry that I wasn't talking about Waterworks as in the utility card in my fave boardgame, Monopoly.  But waterworks--that's my tearducts when it comes to these things.  (Again, showing I really am a human with some actual real feelings...not so tough now am I?)

I got a comment on Chictopia recently about my "black phase"-only then did I realize that "

yes, I was wearing a lot of black recently

Maybe because I wanted to boycott summer; perhaps without realizing it, I figured black was the way to channel my more fall-like longings.

The comment got me thinking, I have all fall and winter to wear black....and as much as I am DONE-AND-DONE with summer, I might as well get some bright color in there while I can.
Dolce and Gabbana,Old Navy,Workday outfit,Summer,H&M *Yellow cotton blouse-Old Navy
*Brown/Ivory scarf-Old navy
*Denim skirt-H&M
*Brown belt-NY&Co.
*Brown wedge sandals-Beacon's Closet

Background tidbits on my attire-
Blouse and scarf bought the other day when I was supposed to be looking for a cute little outfit for my niece. (she'll be 1year old on Sunday!)
Sandals are by far my best Beacon's Closet purchase to date (they're Dolce and Gabbana!!! and my size!!!!)

So, it's high time (yes 6weeks have gone by) that I get a haircut! Check out the overgrown mess of asymmetry I got going on....eeek!
I love my short side, but I tend to forget just how often trims are needed in order to maintain it's proper look. Did I not have short hair for like 5 years of my life back in high school and college???? Yeah, I did-so why do I forget about the maintenance required??
Should I try to get in there Saturday....or hold out a few more days and go next Thursday or Friday? Hmmmmm decisions.
There is a vintage sidewalk sale in the East Village on Saturday, so maybe I'll just go get a trim, then skip on over to the store to check out the goods they say they're going to have for as low as $1.00!!!
Hair

Oh, and after work this evening, I went to the movies. My coworker chose the movie, and while I'm not one to usually go for the girlier of flicks, I was quite pleased and enjoyed her choice:

Julie and Julia

Meryl Streep does an excellent job of portraying Julia Child-you'll just love her, and it almost made me want to cook. But let's face it, domestic goddess I am not.

I found Julie's (Amy Adams) blogging almost more interesting. It becomes such an obsession for her that it interferes with her marriange, life, etc. And I think all bloggers know how this goes. I got to thinking how often I think about my blog, other blogs, and how these thoughts take up about 50% of my time now (this is probably a very low estimate, it's probably more like 95%). Back in April I had so much more free time :) And then there's thinking that my connection with some of these people is real....hilarious considering it's a vast universe of jibberish thrown out into a huge internet world, and I almost think it's for real! As if I know my readers, and those who I follow know me....this is nonsense! Julie has similar feelings, and I think we bloggers can relate to her character and all her blogging woes. (Funny because I just has a similar conversation about such topics last night with friends)
But with that said, I don't mind.....blogging is fun, it's a place to write down my thoughts, my activities about town, and just give myself something to look back on and remember what I did on a particular day or time, and of course what I wore and perhaps why.
And while blogging does make one slightly obsessed, and maybe even self-centered, it's no big deal. So I say, "keep blogging away!" If you're like me, you rather enjoy looking back on yourself and seeing what you could've or couldn't have done differently. (clothing wise of course-heehee).

Oh so tired, goodnite!

Weekend Rewind: August 14-16th, 2009

Let's start off the weekend recap with what I chose when I woke up,

Friday Morning:

*Black linen a-line shift dress-NY&Co.
*Black kidskin t-strap sandals-Colin Stuart
*Animal print epoxy pendant on chain-Forever 21
Now that's summer time class at my finest, the token

"Little Black Dress"

Although most of my workday dresses are easy like this, and would emit a bit of pulled-togetherness, we all know I'm just really

"PUTTING THE 'ASS' IN CLASS!

And while my personality stays true to that saying, it never hurts to at least look the part of an organized work-woman...that would be why I have all these little dresses you've seen throughout the summer as my work wardrobe staple.

The fabric vendors, buyers, etc that I encounter everyday will never know the real me...it never hurts to pull the wool over their eyes like that.
After work, I treated myself to a mani/pedi as my cuticles were in some serious need of help.  I thought I just got this issue taken care of like two weeks ago.  Whatever I've been up to, maybe all the hand sewing, beading, and pulling out staples from paperwork didn't really help the situation, but I was in desperate need to get myself back in tip-top shape.

As I may or may not have mentioned before, I'm sick of summertime.  While it's still so freakin' hot outside, there's not much you can do in terms of throwing oneself full fledged into FALL when the temps are till up there.  Except in the case of NAILS.
Choosing a nail polish shade in a new Fall color is one way to wave an early goodbye to summer, and usher in the well desired crisper cool days of Autumn.

I was DYING to test out my new Sephora/O.P.I. color:

DARKROOM.

It's a lovely inky dark FOREST GREEN with a look of almost BLACK.
What can I say, I'm a sucker for anything super dark like this!
And it's a welcome change to everyone's fall favorite: Lincoln Park After Dark.
I rushed home from Mani/Pedi fun, to throw on some new clothes, take care of my ratty hair by opting for a side ponytail and heading out to meet my BF and former roomate at our local haunt.
The bar outfit includes:
*Black cropped fitted blazer-H&M
*Black beaded tank-Express
*Barely boot-cut jeans-Express
*Black heels-Nine West
*Red flower in hair-H&M
And my best accessory ever--yellowing bruise on left bicep from last weekend's bike crash!

The group from Friday also included:

The Former Roomate
(check out his movie site for anything film related, from new releases to the obscure, I personally enjoyed his commentary on "Breakfast at Tiffany's")

Current Roomate (A.K.A. "The BF")

Saturday,

Let's just say I walked all over Brooklyn in this exact outfit.  And my 15 years of high-heel wearing came in handy.

Especially when Mel and I forgot the G train is so short, and had to run half the length of the subway station before the doors slid closed.  I'm sure it was a sight to the other passengers, but the 4-1/2" heels had nothing on me!
*Aqua/Black color-blocked dress-Topshop
*White vinyl sash-American Apparel
*Black sandals-Miss Sixty
*Fuchsia sequined suede tote-Tory Burch

When I say we walked all over, we indeed went far.
-From 5th Ave in Park Slope, to Atlantic Ave, To Court Street in Carroll Gardens.
-Then back to Park Slope on the already mentioned G train.
-Then down 7th Ave, turned and walked to 5th Ave., then a few more block until we decided on a restaurant.
Of course there was shopping in between, there were birthday presents for the BFF to be bought.
(yea Amy!  Hope you like the goodies I found)
Oh and a little Beacon's Closet shopping for myself-scored a cute little 70s tunic, a little girl looking vintage dress, and a sweet 80s Jordache top.  All perfect for October weather, another reason I'm soooooo tired of stupid summer already.  C'mon a girl wants to wear her new Fall threads--BADLY!

Now today is Sunday, sadly my weekend is coming to an end.
Yet, I have not gotten up and dressed for the day.  I have to clean a bit, then I'll prepare myself for an awesome night of bowling at Melody Lanes in Sunset Park.
It's become our Sunday Night Thing!

So while I have no clue what the day has in store for me, or what clothing I may choose, if bowling turns out to be anything like last Sunday, then I have no doubt it will be great:
Last Sunday Bowling Night Attire:
*Turquoise Afternoon Naps (a Cleveland friend's band) t-shirt
*Distressed boyfriend jeans-Uniqlo
*Taupe heels-Urban Outfitters
*Mustaches (see below)-just hilarious!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Sushi Tuesday

Crazy stuff happening when BF tries to take a picture.
Wierd outlines, sketchy scenery, blurry quality....sorry.
Quick outfit thrown together on an otherwise not so eventful day.
Too hot still, so I did not cook or even attempt to make dinner.  Luckily BF was all for going out for Sushi.
And this outfit proved to be a fine choice for a quick bite to eat in our Park Slope 'hood.

*Yellow satin tunic-NY&Co.
*Skinny Jeans-Uniqlo
*Brown suede shoes-Target
*Brown wooden necklace-Forever 21
*Gold hoop earrings-Forever 21

Funny, this is actually right outside the sushi restaurant...I'm merely standing 5ft over from their front door-I like the graffiti, construction cone, and gum riddled sidewalk....what a lovely city I live in-so "clean".
