Daily Wear: Yeehaw Being the Theme

nickie1
I'm a "theme" type...meaning I like themes, I embrace dressing like its a certain themeday, and yes...I will probably be that 50yr old lady wearing holiday sweatshirts at Christmas time.
But tell me, when did theme dressing ever ruin a night?
If anything, it makes the night more fun if you ask me!

Even a movie night can be wayyyyyyyy too much fun.
You know, like when you're planning on watching a documentary on Waylon Jennings, then rounding out the movie viewing with "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"?
THEME HERE BEING COUNTRY n WESTERN!
burt&Dolly
So can I get a, "YEEEEEE-HAW, Ya'll"?!?

Too bad we did not have cowboys and indian type glasses, but my friend did the best she could by busting out her newly thrifted equestrian tumblers.
Ummmmmmm, I think it must've been the horses...I really can't think of any other reason we'd equate these to being "western" like?
equestriancup
But wait...wait for it...ok!
You're completely allowed to judge me on this one...I may or may not have gotten wayyyyy too drunk on a bottle of appletini stuff!
Who am I?
And no, I do not think my life is like an episode of "Sex and the City", and no I do not relate to the quirky "Carrie" character...I don't even know about this show too much other than they drink crap like appletinis.  And now apparently I do too!
(Thanks to Alex'sWonderland for leaving this at my house when she was visiting NYC)
appletini
Needless to say, the appletinis did me in...but not before I kicked up my heels and did a little dosey-doh. Afterall, I did dress "theme"-wise for my country musician movie night...
and duh, that means I busted out my vintage cowboy boots!

These are the real deal folks.  They were given to me back when I was like 21...and they're still getting wear to this day!  Probably actually I wear them more now than I did then.
They're my lovely little western gems, cherry red, leather, real legit cowboy booys!

I'm certain Waylon would've appreciated my efforts for movie night, no?
boots
So tell me...am I the only loony lady that dresses around a movie night w/some made up theme dancing around in her head?
(theme here being country cowboy crooners whisking me off my feet and tossing me on the back of their horse and together we gallop off into the sunset, my red vintage boots and all...and of course, something like Waylon's "Amanda" will be the song playing as this dillusional idea all goes down).
It would be nice of you to at least humor me and tell me you do this as well from time to time.
(I mean dress around a theme, not dream about Waylon Jennings).

Wearing:
A typically boring outfit other than the boots on display!
*Green tank--uniqlo
*cut-offs--gap
*vintage cowboy boots--gifted to me

Now exuse me lil' ladies (and gents??), I'm visiting my bestie in Cleveland, getting my Thrift store shopping fix, drinking way too many cocktails, and about to meet up with a bunch of ol' college friends. So no more blogging this weekend...I'm off to enjoy life.

Daily Wear: WOAH...What Happened?

When there's a friend in town you know I'm not one to sit at home...Hell NO!  We go out, and we go out RIGHT!
Usually, being someone's first visit to the city, I love to overload their senses by taking them to this crazy Indian Restaurant, Panna II.  If you ask me, it mostly just doubles as a fire hazard, what with all the chili pepper lights and all...but it also moonlights as a wonderful memory for my visiting friends to take home with them.
IMG_5496
So, with Alex of "Alex's Wonderland" being in town to visit her college roomie, Sew Me Some Love, we took our wonderful selves to that very restaurant!
I hope the girls liked it...because its pretty tasty cheap food, and makes for lovely pics, no?
IMG_5494
Of course if I'm going to be out and about, I need some of my regular partners in crime to help me rile up the townfolk and show the visitors a good time.
So thanks dolls for tagging along and being your badass selves!!!!!
IMG_5511
With a crew like ours, some beers in our bellies, well..........
IMG_5500
Let's just say we got down with our crazy selves...or, er....um............ maybe I just got down?  Who really knows what happened, because I certainly cannot get my head out of the fog that was Saturday Night.
IMG_5518
So let's hear it for friends visiting from faraway lands (ok not really, Indiana is NOT that far), friends closeby, and saturday nights in NYC!!!  never ever a dull moment.
IMG_5517
And of course, impromptu blogger shots, what else are the streets of NY good for?

Wearing:
*Black/white scarf-Express
*Black tank dress-H&M
*Black bullet belt-Merry Go Round (lost on Saturday-boo)
*Black Fringe bag-H&M
*Black shoes-Dolce Vita

Weekend Rewind: December 18-19th, 2010

Fun weekend, but I hate to see it end.  Really, work tomorrow already?
(least its a 3 day work week for me, yay holidays!)

Saturday, December 18th, 2010:
The 12yr old Goes from Gay Bar to Old Guy Bar
IMG_1995
I say "12 year old" because let's face it, I'm looking a bit of just that.
I don't wear this dress often because I know its made for a preteen, and I'm not a preteen back in 1968, although that would not be such a bad thing.
That little girl dress gets me everytime I put it on though, I immediately do up everything else to look like I'm barely out of junior high.  It's the pink, I do PINK everywhere with this thing-bag, dress, headband....aaaaaah!  Luckily Hot Pink is way high up on my list of fave colors!

I also got inspired by a hair article I read in Glamour the other morning.  It's all about leaving your hair natural, going with its god-given texture.  I tried it out, it looks OK with a headband, I got compliments from my friend and hairstylist; therefore I know it couldn't have been that bad.
I'll keep it in mind for those days I'm running a wee behind getting ready for work
(wait, that's everyday).
IMG_1994
So I met up with these two buddies at Excelsior in Park Slope.  I rather quite liked the bar because I could talk about whatever I wanted and not have any of the guys around me even show the least bit of interest.  Let's just say what I have is not what they want.
Sometimes that's a major plus, eh, actually usually this is a plus-plus!
IMG_2009
After Excelsior, we made our way up to 7th Ave. and hit a bar that always made me laugh everytime I walked by; Old Carriage Inn I believe it's called.  I think its something about the random story ex bf would always tell every single time we passed it...its always a good giggle.
(I used to live in Park Slope if we'll all take a moment to remember, nice 'hood but glad I'm out)
Once inside, it was a total old man sports bar, and it looked nothing like anything you'd see in NYC.
Oh no....I felt like I was in small town Ohio, or anywhere in the middle of nowhere.
The shitty karaoke, the lack of pretentious atmosphere, the clientele--actually pretty fun.
A laid back, jeans and t-shirt crowd, I'll take it!  And I will be back.

And, its always a plus when Marc decides he's going to give us his best rendition of "Bette Davis Eyes".
YES PLEASE-LOVE THAT SONG!
IMG_2010
Apparently they give prizes away, but I wasn't quite certain how that all worked, not everyone got to spin the wheel.  Being that I've slightly calmed down in my older age, I don't find myself singing at karaoke with the actual mic in my hands these days (I just sit and sing into my fist as if I'm a rockstar), so I didn't get to spin that wheel at all.  Shit, I could've eat the crap outta those toostie rolls!
(um, nevermind that later that night when I grabbed a cab the girls before me left xmas cookies in a bag...yep, I totally chowed down on their forgotten cookies.  Who am I? eating strangers' treats.  It's the sweet tooth, it takes over!)
Untitled-1
Yep, successfully fun night...but I had to run along around 1:30am because I had a very important event to attend on Sunday morning. (sorry mom, it was not church)
12yr old in Vintage
Saturday's outfit:
*Fuchsia vintage dress-Beacon's Closet (P.Slope location)
*Fuchsia suede bag-Tory Burch
*Beige leather boots-Jessica Simpson
*Gray textured tights-HUE
*Pink felted headband-Bust Craftacular craft fair
*Silver vintage owl necklace-gift from Clydes Rebirth

And just for funsies...a random Holiday-esque pic from Sat. night.  Oh those Park Slopers really go all out; then again they have the storybook brownstones so perfect for excess decorating.
But c'mon, life size toy soldiers?  Only makes for a Nickie-type picture...so yeah I'll take it.

Nickie Takes Down Nashville x2
IMG_2039
Back up a few paragraphs and you'll see I mention having to go home early for an "very important event".  What's more important than slaying two southern dudes from Nashville with your eating abilities?  I figured those boys could eat...but they were not nearly as good about going home early on a Sat. night like me...oh no, and just that worked to my advantage.

So needless to say, what does one wear to an eating contest?  I mean I was ready to go all out and get down and vomit-y with this if need be.  Pajamas would've been the perfect solution to clothing, but that's not happening.  Eh, I still wanted to look like myself, but needed something functional in case my stomach needed some expanding room.
I came up with a solution, a slouchy t-shirt (to conceal any gross food baby like bellies I might've grown), skinny jeans that need a good wash/dry to get the tight-ass fit back into the waist (all the better for an eating contest right now though when the waist is a bit loose), and a cardi because its cold (very practical today indeed, right?)
standard plate
Well, turns out I could've worn anything in my darn closet, the tightest of dresses, the most uncomfy tights, because the plate above was the standard fare and it only required me to eat two plates.
Yes, I just told you I WON!
Phsssssh though, two plates!  c'mon boys-where's the challenge?

All it took was a quick sizing up of my competition,
Sizing up my Competition
The look you get right before you blow chunks at the dinner table,
Vomit
A couple of my laugh-inducing, self lived, classic vomit stories,
Competition shot
And BAM!
One boy down...the other slugging behind...I was a 1/2plate ahead and I went on strong till the end.  I will say, I was not impressed with myself at all--when will I ever get to see my true eating potential.  It didn't happen at my Shark Week Feeding Frenzy at Red Lobster, and it didn't happen here.
Almost Clean Plate Club
Although I walked away with bragging rights and utter surprise that I actually won (I talked a big game for 2wks straight, but honestly I didn't think I had this one in the bag), I need a redo...just because.
Untitled-1
If there's a next time, I have a feeling the stakes will be higher, there's going to be more destructive behavior added to the contest, and they won't go down as easily as today.  I should start practicing.
And I should start considering my next outfit--practical yet not pajamas.

Sunday's Outfit:
*Brown leopard print cardigan-H&M
*Black vintage concert tshirt-Thrift Store
*Skinny Jeans-Uniqlo
*Black leather boots-Jessica Simpson
*Silver BFF necklace-Etsy

******
Side Note-Anyone, a-hem Jessica Simpson PR peeps/reps, notice how often I wear her shoes.  Have you ever witnessed just how far and often I walk around this city in the shoes too?  I never take them off.  Soooooooo just sayin, I talk a good talk about her shoes...wink wink.
(shamless tactics to get some shoes on my part-100% completely)

Weekend Rewind: September 11th-12th, 2010

Ah, a quick little Weekend Rewind, for a not so-super-eventful weekend, but ok nonetheless.

Saturday: September 11th, 2010--

It started out innocently enough...a dinner of noodles.  I could totally go for this right about now (starving)
DSCN6411
I was running around with some of my Dolls , hit up our new East Village clubhouse to see if it would suffice as our regular hangout spot when in that 'hood--pretty safe to say the oldies on the jukebox sealed the deal.
DSCN6413
That same night I decided my vest goes with anything I want to wear--so maybe it doesn't really, but it definitly adds a little spark, whether or not it really "goes" with the outfit--you be the judge  (Just remember to think before you speak...my name afterall is "Joan Threat"--that's scary stuff!)
DSCN6414
I realize I didn't even snap an outfit shot...so you'll just have to imagine the lower half.
I was wearing:
-My girl gang vest, duh
-Vintage printed mini-dress, Beacon's Closet
-Brown knee-high suede and leather boots, Franco Sarto (via DSW)--is that the name??
-Vintage brown structured bag, Thrift Store
DSCN6415

Sunday: September 12th, 2010--

I spent my entire day and afternoon at home.  I had big plans to take 4 bags of clothing to Buffalo Exchange--misty rain and not-so-pleasant weather told me to nix that idea for now.
IMG_1049
Later in the evening it was time for me to get dressed and head off to the village for the Chictopia10/Juicy Couture afterparty.  (Not so much my thing again as it ranks right up there with FNO stuff to me--see my last post for thoughts on that.  But, Nikka having RSVP'd for 5 of us convinced me it would be fun and fine since we'd be friends amongst out own little selves.  Ok she's right...and it was fun for a Sunday).
IMG_1078
I pulled out this ol' frock...I wore it to my 26th birthday party so long ago...thought I'd see if it still fit and if so I'd give the ol' girl another whirl.  Oh it fit...woohoo!
IMG_1071
Wearing:
-White vintage dress, Love Saves the Day
-Black booties, Steve Madden
-Black opaque tights, HUE
-Silver Best Friends necklace, Etsy
White after Labor Day
So off I went, out into the misty rain, to attend the Chictopia party.  Where as usual, I quickly jumped on board with the "free drinks" thing...
IMG_1096
Browsed the merch, as if I actually wear or am considering a Juicy Couture purchase (yep, pretty much this photo is not real life stuff going on here...the only stuff I was interested in perusing really would be the children's clothing.  Not for this adult though, no way no how)
IMG_1099
And more free drinks...basically adding to my carelessness in terms of my caloric intake for the day.
IMG_1097
Luckily I had these two firecrackers to keep me company because I could hang out with them all day and never tire, two funny sassy friends indeed!
IMG_1089
I swear, I wasn't 100% clique-y the whole evening, at times I did talk to people outside my regular NYC based friends.  Now girls, I will say I wasn't overly social, but to those I did meet and greet and mingle with, it was a delight...thanks for saying hi, or letting me say hi to you.
IMG_1094
Just a few more things to make you believe I might actually shop at Juicy...actually, it's not too far fetched to picture me in a piece of this jewelry.  However, proudly can I admit I did not purchase anything and I stuck to my guns (those guns being that I DO NOT wear Juicy, nor did I ever own anything with anything written across the butt...Phew!)
IMG_1095
Honestly, I probably would've been down for buying this peacock...I wonder its real, like stuffed?  This would make a wonderful bday present for a friend of mine!  Oh the crapiness...its only a decoration, not for sale!  grrrr, its the best thing in there!
IMG_1092

Like I said...not too exciting of a weekend.  Sometimes I'm a bore.

Daily Wear: A perfect Balance to Life

I always like to think highly of myself in terms of fun and responsibility, work and play, sleep vs. lack there of (ok, maybe this is more like I'm going to look like the 45yr old Lindsay Lohan looks like if I don't slow it down...then again Lindsay is early '20s looking 45, and I've got her by a few years and think I'm no where near looking 45, so scratch that-I'm good to go for now).  I'm trying to say that at times I live the best of both lives, sometimes I don't know how I manage to have the energy I need to make it through my crazy weekends...but this outfit managed to keep things going steady from Saturday straight thru to Sunday.  And that's that perfectly balanced life I'm talking about...I manage to play hard, but work even harder! (this saying is usually the other way around, in terms of my life-its better this way)

Yeah, you're thinking, "gross, what is she talking about this outfit took her from Saturday into Sunday??? Don't even tell me you slathered yourself up with some patchouli and went about your day as if there was no need to shower."

-Ok, let me first off say I do shower...but I also slather on the patchouli.
-Secondly, here's how it went down.  After my swap meet on Saturday, Mel and I quickly changed into more casual clothes and hit up the East Village.  Now this is where most of our Saturday nights turn into sunrise on Sunday before we know it.  And this night was no different.
Soooooooooooooo, while I was reenacting Poison videos at 8am, lip syncing at the top of my lungs, believing I could be CC Deville and Bret Michaels combined into one, I realized in a mere 4 hours I'd be needing to get up and meet the ever so fun lil' Indiana blogger (so duh I like her already, she's from Indiana!  Holla!!!), Toast with Charmalade.
So I race home, take a quick few hours of a catnap, get up at noon, get ready, feel too tired to think about clothing, sniff the outfit from last nite-notice its not rank at all, throw it on knowing that if anywhere you can pull off day old clothing and make it look feasible, its Williamsburg. (and yes, little patchouli dab here and there never hurts either) And this is exactly what I did.  Sooooooooo, sorry Charmalade....I hate to admit that this is why I didn't mind what outfit photos of mine you kept, basically because I already had these from Saturday night.  ewwwwwww!
OK, don't think ill of me now that you know I put on the same clothes from the night before...I actually didn't get the full required 8hrs of sleep that one needs to make rational decisions.  It was a dressing move made in haste I will admit-but one that turned out OK by both days' standards.
But you see, I managed to stay out all night have a blast and get up in time to meet Charmalade and shop till our hearts were content at Beacon's Closet.  Perfect balance to my life I tell ya!
And of course when her friend suggested LA Burrito for lunch, obviously I was incredibly hungry!!!!  All that crazy NYC fun can really work up a girl's appetite.
Saturday into Sunday
Saturday, Mel gave me this shirt before the swap-its a Kensie top of course...but she knew slouchy, black and white, yeah...that's a Nickie, not so much a Mel.  Did I think twice about taking it off her hands, hell no!
Did acquiring this top on Saturday afternoon make it super easy for me to get ready Saturday night in a jiffy?  Hell Yeah!  (I couldn't wait to wear it!)
IMG_0765
I'm also going to tell you I spiced up my own personal life a bit by actually wearing LIPSTICK-not lipgloss, not Dr. Pepper Bonne Belle (fave!), and not chapstick.  I recently got my hands on some amazing bright fuchsia, perfect for summer, lipstick from The_ed.  She's a Swappy_Seconds repeat swapper, and swapping with her is beyond awesome for me--she's a Mary Kay rep, so she's always tempting me with makeup.  Needless to say it makes swapping easy when you're offering up Pink Melon lipstick!
IMG_0767
Lipstick, something I rarely wear, I'm a gloss girl lets be honest.  Lipstick however, does make me just want to pop my lips, smack away, and do a lot of "MUAH's" when I have to suck it up and do cheek kissing hello greetings like most NYC'rs like to do....midwest head nod is more my style.  But yeah, after living here for nearly 8yrs its time I just get over it, I've gotten over my hugging phobia, so now on to working away the cheek kiss awkwardness I tend to possess.  Maybe I should just walk around with my Pink Melon lipstick in my pocket so I'm ready for the cheek kiss greeting at any time, and I can just feel more comfy doing it because I'm all ready to give big ol' MUAH smooches and leave behind my mark on the cheeks of all friends that dare try to make me greet them this way!
IMG_0773
Yeah....so we've got the Pink Melon Mary Kay lipstick, and the Black/white slouchy Kensie tee.
Besides that, you'll find me here wearing:
DIY cut-off shorts--Gap
Black platforms--Topshop
Ivory quilted chainpurse--Thrift Store.

Now, back to that "perfect balance" of a life I lead...it's almost 11:30pm, if I go to bed now I'll get 7.5hrs of sleep, more than enough to get up bright eyed and bushy tailed tomorrow!  tootles

Weekend Rewind: August 7th-8th, 2010

Lately these past few weekends have been so busy crazy, with me and all the concerts I'm going to :), I just can't keep up with this here ol' blog.  And I know for certain the Weekend Rewinds have been lacking.  As in--NON EXISTENT!

Well when your little bloggity blog friend comes to town (that's you ClydesRebirth!) sometimes these visits just call for a good friggin' time on the town.  And that just leads me to having a pretty darn fun Weekend Rewind.

Saturday: August 7th, 2010-
After a long rough night on Friday, we found ourselves back at it again come Saturday evening.  Not only did I get to run around with Merl in tow, I also got to meet up with a brand new face, Morgan over at Morgan and Lua
We spent the majority of the evening hours in the East Village.  Not so sure my choice of bars are up their alley, but nonetheless they seemed ok to kill some time at Cherry Tavern before hitting up the dancefloor around the corner.

(Merl and Morgan @ Cherry Tavern)
IMG_0655
But before we could hit up the dive bar scene, or the dance floor at my little beloved rock n roll skeeze fest of a place (LIT), we had a Karaoke Birthday Party to attend.
And just tell me, what Karaoke Party would you NOT find a little '80s Hair Hotness, I mean Bon Jovi, blaring on the screen?  Yeah, that wouldn't be much of a karaoke shindig if there wasn't a little Jovi to heat things up!
IMG_0643
(Cupcakes and Karaoke! Happy Birthday Jana!)
IMG_0650
And just when I was pretty steamed up from the Bon Jovi, I freakin get an eyefull of sweaty abs and workout girls.  All the while hearing one of our peers, ok many of them (including myself), yell out a few lines of MJ's (woot woot, Indiana....Michael Jackson, HOOSIER PRIDE).  This is the stuff karaoke is made of!  I could watch these ridiculous "Made-for-Karaoke" videos nonstop--some of the funniest stuff I've seen in a long LONG time.
IMG_0646
After Karaoke that's when we headed back downtown (because I'm soon to be a Downtown Doll--sorry, girl gang side project going on--whole other story), where I clearly had enough beers that it was time to accessorize the "super classy" denim cut-offs the best way possible, with yet another beer-and a super classy fine one at that.  Hipster-fest 2010, PBR in hand!  YIKES (ok not so Yikes, I've been drinking this stuff since about 1999)

BTW-
I think I've touched on weekend clothing here in NYC before--the thing is, you go out in the afternoon (say 2pm) and you just DONT GO HOME until the sun comes back up!  So as it happens, I tend to be in my daytime jean short look a lot of the time, so much for getting dolled up for a night on the town...it just doesn't happen when you roll my way.  (Just wanted to explain why I always am dressed like a Saturday afternoon even when I claim its after midnight.  This explanation should be suitable)
IMG_0652
Saturday's attire includes:
*Pink silk blouse, F21 (now thrown in the garbage because I stained the heck out of it with spilled drinks)
*DIY denim cut-offs, Gap
*Brown suede sandals, Target
*Pearl and chains necklace, Topshop
*vintage Cameo necklace, Thrift Store
**Best accessory yet (better than the PBR, but still along the same lines)...HUGE KNOT, aka SWOLLEN RIGHT KNEE--another name for "I fell and bruised my knee pretttt-y bad".  You just didn't notice 'till I pointed it out right?

Sunday: August 8th, 2010--
Obviously I slept in on Sunday, and when I did manage to get up and out of the house I took it uber casual.  I like to call this look my "Urban Cowgirl" attire.  I think its got lots of western undertones, but I'm here in the city with a city-set mind about me, so yeah...Urban Cowgirl seems about right.  (I was once called this by a man on the street about a year ago.  Ever since, I'm pretty certain he was right, and its fine by me).
Urban Cowgirl
I was due uptown at the Central Park Summerstage for another Free Concert (seriously, I'm crazy about these free concerts!  I'm going to them right and left this summer).  This time I was meeting my lil' possee to see the XX and Chairlift.  The line was much too long and there was no way of getting in with the loads of people that showed up so we just opted for the rocky bluff outside the gates.

Since we did a little impromptu rock climbing to get to our destination I was rather proud of myself for making a semi-sensible clothing decision.  I was pondering wearing a skirt and my sky-high wedges, and now in hindsight I'm 110% positive that just wouldn't have worked out well for me.  So yay Nickie--way to dress accordingly.
IMG_0660
And on a completely different note, I planted my tripod in yet another area of my roof for these shots.  surprisingly no one was up there at 2pm on Sunday...note to self, "Maybe no one will be up there for my little clothes swap I'm having next Sat. at 2pm"-wanna come?
IMG_0670
Not only am I finding my roof is full of wonderful locations to shoot, I'm also realizing its like my own personal WHITE SNAKE video!  Hello WIND MACHINE!  Enter Nickie's ROCK N ROLL DREAM--I'd love to have a wind machine follow me EVERYWHERE.  Not only for the obvious "effortless cool" a wind machine can offer, but c'mon--who wouldn't want a little extra breeze, say on the skeezy dance floor I mentioned above?  This girl totally wants that!
IMG_0675
Back on track folks....
Sunday's attire included:
*Vintage plaid button-up, courtesy of ex bf (thanks, it doesn't fit you anymore anyway)
*Denim Shorts, F21
*Brown booties, Steven Madden
*Brown vintage Coach purse, Thrift Store
*Red necklace, F21
*Brown sunglasses, H&M
*** And Red Benefit Benetint lip gloss of course!  You know I love that stuff!

Ok kiddies...I have to admit, I've fallen asleep about 7 times trying to get thru this.  So as the ever so awesome song "1999" goes, "I was dreamin when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray" but I need to hit the hay.
Later friends!
