Music Monday: 4 Knots Music Festival

Just in time for Music Monday,

I happened to go to an all day free festival/concert this weekend at the Southstreet Seaport.

It was the Village Voice's answer to having cancelled Siren Fest for good...so they were kind enough to bring NYers:

There were a few bands I wanted to see!
(check them out if you want something new, or maybe you've already heard of them if you're in the know...I am soooooo not "in the know"; I used my San Fransisco friend's music knowledge to find out about one of these bands, then some other friends told me about a few others...but a free show is a free show, and I'm all about free shows and discovering bands I didn't know existed.)

One such band I went to see was Davila 666 (this is the SF friend's suggestion from a few months back, Thanks Kristine!...they did not disappoint; although then again I watched from a balcony overlooking the stage because $5.00 pitchers of beer were calling my name in the hot summer heat, its rare when I stick around front and center for a band if $5 beer is available nearby)


Another band I happened to catch, actually as soon as I walked up they were already playing, was Eleanor Friedberger.  
(Now I'll admit I didn't even know who this was, let alone go to see her, but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed her sound!  Further research told me she's 1 part of Fiery Furnaces, I wish I knew this kinda stuff beforehand...duh!)

This girl has some fun style, she's quirky and pretty (look at google images!)...what any girl strives for, right?  ummmmm Ok maybe just me.

After a few more songs of hers, my buddy Jess and I walked down to the end of the Pier to check out the sights.  You see, Southstreet Seaport is not an area of Manhattan I usually tend to frequent...um NO!  Not my scene, just my scene for that day...mostly populated by the likes of tourists, sorority types (sorry girls if this is you, but its not my thing), and other douche-y characters I'd rather not deal with.  (yes, I'm stereotyping the Southstreet Seaport "set", but I'll be you 9x out of 10, I've got it nailed!)

With that being said, I won't lie...its pretty nice; beautiful actually...breezy, sunny, and oh-so-nautical!

Bummer, no such luck!

After our little jaunt around the pier, a few $5 pitchers of beer, we went back down to face the masses that had joined the crowd since we were last down in the pit.  We weaseled our way up front, just as any experienced cute concert goer should be able to do, and we had a great view for the band we came to see,
TITUS ANDRONICUS!

Holy hell...an electric violin...they were pretty darn good.  A bit of a stupid mosh pit broke out but really what's that; like we can't hold our own ground when jabs are being taken and people are crowd surfing? Actually I just laughed while I shoved back, seriously ...people still do that?  Maybe I'm old, but maybe I held up just fine against the youngin's...YEAH!

Oh geez...what a hot day in the sun, full of free music and cheap beer.  It was just as I imagined it to be...and now I hope you go and listen to some of these bands, or the ones listed on the 4 Knots flier and tell me what you think.  Good, bad, just not your cup of tea???

What about the Seaport, you think you'd hang out here?  Yikes! um, sure you want to read my blog if you answered "yes"?  Something about the financial district, going that far downtown, ewwww just BORING in my world.  But to each his own right?  I don't expect you to like my things, and you should not expect me to like the Southstreet Seaport enough to really go back.  (oh wait, I spoke too soon...darn, I have to go back on 7/31 'cause the Raveonettes are playing for free down there...looks like I've got one more trip to get in under my belt before I call it quits w/the Seaport.  wish me luck!  It could be worse...I mean it could be TIMES SQUARE--eeek!)

Oh, just FYI, it was hot, I wanted to be comfy, that's about all I know with this outfit--short skirt, see through loose fitting top, Yep...cool and comfy (and somewhat questionable as always!).

Obviously by the time we were leaving and off the subway we worked up a hunger and were again thirsty...free pizza with every beer just called to us!

We shoved our faces then we went home.
This has nothing to do with music, just the pizza is really good for being FREE!  It looks gross, it is gross, but for free--its delicious!

Sooooooooo, ok...go listen to some music!  Hope you like something I talked about...if not, what are you listenin' to???
 I want to know...as I said, "I'm soooooo not in the know", so help a girl out musically wouldya!?!

Daily Wear: To See a Show

I snapped these outfit photos last week right before I headed out to see the Raveonettes.  The outfit is a little different for me as far as my typical show outfit goes.  Generally when seeing a band I opt for the skinny jeans and black or white tshirt combo with my leather bomber.  It just seems like something that that would be "show appropriate"...or maybe its because I sometimes have to go see bands by myself and an outfit like that will make me seem less approachable (not that strangers are approaching me anyhow, but you know what I'm saying).

So I figured, why not give something a little more girly a try for once.  Plus I was going with 3 of my gf's so I didn't necessarily need to hide my insecurities behind the "tough girl" outfit :) haha.
In the end, this outfit faired just fine for me.  It worked out well and was a welcome break to my usual show attire.

I am kinda stoked to wear this dress this summer actually.  Without a jacket to be exact.  It's a nipped in elastic waist with a ruffle detail at the neckline.  It's very cute and short and girly...all things I like to take for a spin from time to time.  Plus its floral and I have been wanting some more floral #'s in my wardrobe for summertime; so pefecto!

By the way...the Raveonettes were awesome!

The Garrott Tee: Look #3-Weekend Warrior

We're 3 weeks/3 looks deep into the Garrott Design Tshirt Challenge.

Ok its not a HUGE challenge, just a bit of a riddle of sorts--just how will I wear my tshirt differently this week from last week?  What can I do to keep it out of jeans, tshirt, tennis shoes territory?

This time around, I present to you (my signature clothing item of course-the cutoff shorts) what I call

"Weekend Warrior"

It was only a matter of time till I showed you all how I would pair the Garrott Tshirt up with my favorite bottoms--my white trash denim cut-offs. 

I once mentioned way back in September that these babies were being retired for the season...yeah right!  Who did I think I was, and whom did I think I was fooling?  Toss on some tights or leggings underneath and they're as good to go anywhere as I thought they were this summer.

(to which I laugh thinking of all the higher-brow establishments, and tons of lowbrow places, I wore them to as if both called for equal dress)

Cut-offs, with leggings in my case, add a little extra spunk and quirkiness to the Garrott Tee, especially great for a Sunday of errands, and dinner, and then a show.

(the dinner=high brow, the show=lowbrow...and I was just fine in both settings-I'm a chameleon like that).

To add to the spunkiness of the shorts with the Garrott Tee,

I though it almost necessary to show you

some color...some pops of interest here and there. 

The last two looks were pale and mostly tones of grays and black with the exception of the blushy colored skirt of Look #1

Plus, on the weekends, why not get a little punchy with the bright tones?  The weekends are my time, I don't have to impress anyone but myself...therefore I wear what I like, not always what's "appropriate".  Sometimes too much color of different sorts can overwhelm at the office persay,

but weekends-nothing holds me back.

It's still a wee bit chilly considering its only February, so I went with a slouchly long cardigan-lightweight however and a bold shot of juicy goodness in the form of my Poppy/coach bag.  (it always manages to make any outfit pop...heh heh, maybe why its POPPY??? probably not.--but on a side note, I do like that I just said "heh heh" as if my name is Beavis-gah, can't wait for the return of Beavis and Butthead on MTV!)

And on that note, I think I need to exit this blog.  I am all over the place, being spastic, writing whatever gibberish pops into my brain...seriously, why jump from "color" talk to "Beavis and Butthead"?

If you follow my tweets, then you know that I've been dying for my Rock on the World purchases for WEEKS!  I knew they ship by boat and they're based in Thailand, but when a girl wants her clothes 3 weeks is a long time to make her wait!

I could not be more delighted with my purchase!  It really fits great, is everything I hoped it would be, and lets me look like my rock n roll wannabe self while pretty much shout'n out my love for the Crue.

Daily Wear: "Bring It"

Yesterday, Mel and I went to Brooklyn Bowl to see Those Darlins' 

(fine Nashville band if ever there was one).

I thought putting on my "tough-girl" threads and trying my hand at looking "metal" was the way to go.

You gotta put your game face on when you go to these shows, lots of pretentious little hipsters out here in BK...so bring it!

Oh and "bring it" did they...this silly t-shirt of mine was the topic of numerous conversations.

I never realized a crappy vintage Firehouse t-shirt could spur such nonsense.

-First there was the kid that quizzed me on Firehouse as if I was wearing a t-shirt just because that's what ironic Williamsburg hipsters do....oh no young gent, I know what I'm talking about if I'm going to wear a shirt like this.  You best believe I'm not just throwing it on without being able to talk the talk and know my shit in terms of a band like this.

-Secondly, there was another guy that just genuinely wanted to know if I actually liked Firehouse.  The answer is, "No, not really...but I do have a song or two in my collection of theirs"  (guilty pleasures)

-Third, another person asking me if I've ever seen Firehouse in concert to which was followed by me being knee deep in conversation about hairbands and their concerts.

So whatever kids...I don't mind talking to you, and I don't mind talking about my shirt...but please don't think you can come up and make fun of me by trying to catch me being void of all information on the band at hand. (as was the case with the first person)

Now...if only I could back up my "look" the way I can back up my t-shirt.

I could probably very well be called out on being a not-so-tough girl.  Even though, clearly I am trying to dress the part--did it work?  Or do you think I just look like a wimp?

Doesn't hurt when there's special guests like Kid Sister too...now I'll admit I never had listened to her, but I always meant to.  I read and hear a lot about her in the likes of Bust and Nylon magazines.  Pretty OK stuff, I will admit I was scufflin' my feet a little to her too.

And of course, most of my weekend was spent with Lil' Man and his mama...watching a kid is some pretty tough stuff.  I don't know how you moms do it 24/7...he wore me out!


So yep, no Weekend Rewind--this IS the weekend in a nutshell.  I've got high hopes and big plans for the Downtown Dolls' though...lots of tough girl fashion statements to be made for sure.  Lots of sneers, lip curls, and fire being spit from our tongues--because yeah, we're just that tough!

Ok ok, back to Wild as a Mink now...its feeling like Fall outside, maybe cause there's something like 29days left till Autumn!  Woot Woot!  So maybe I'll whip up some sorta summer/fall hybrid of an outfit this week and toss it on up on this here bloggy blog.  Come back soon.

Daily Outfit: Where's my Gatsby Finery?

Seriously, something is wrong with me...I'm beginning to worry I'm narcoleptic or something.  This is an outfit post from Sunday--what's today?  Thursday!!!!!!
I honestly cannot seem to stay awake past 10pm, I fell asleep in the middle of uploading these pictures to Flickr last night.  And not just like letting the computer do its thing, I mean I fell asleep while I was physically clicking which ones to upload to my photostream!

So I apologize for my random weekend posts during the middle of the week.  And my lack of consistency in posting.  I'm very unhappy with myself for this...but something is physically wrong and I cannot keep my eye open!  (I have a doctor's appt. next weekend for a whole slew of issues I'm finding myself coming upon...damn WebMD-it turns me into a crazy woman with a million health issues).

Ok, well let's backtrack to last Sunday...
I hopped on the ferry to Governor's Island with my friend Cristina, and her lil' man.  We were headed to a Gatsby-era Lawn Jazz party.  While most of the attendees were dressed in their best 20's and 30's garb, we knew we might not stay there all day, nor do we have attire suitable to this point in time, so we opted for our own little picnic-y finery.  (It's unfortunate that I do not own a single 1920's piece considering that one of my favorite books/movies of all time is THE GREAT GATSBY!  Oh that Robert Redford back in the day!  and what I wouldn't give to be Jordan Baker!  Forget Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanon, seriously--she's a whiny dainty little flower of a girl, so not my style...i'm all about being Jordan if I ever choose to go that route!)

It was awesome, parked along side of the great lawn party were a bunch of old cars.  "Lil' Man" immediately took a liking to them! He absolutely could not wait to get his photos taken with the vehicles.  (PS-cutest Kid EVER!  no?)

Then of course it was my turn...I couldn't wait to get my own photos taken with my favorite of the group...the Ivory Car.  It's a beauty for sure...and it happened to match my outfit better than the rest!



Since I didn't have any Gatsby-appropriate clothing, I went with a new dress I had found at Beacon's Closet last time I was visiting Mel in Park Slope.  I thought it was a perfect option for a hot hot day picnicing on an island in the summertime.
It was a pretty good solution for the heat, but it was also a little more open in front than I'm used to wearing.  I think I wasn't quite sure what to do with myself in terms of putting "the girls" on full display like that.  I almost left without the huge pearl necklace--luckily I remembered to put it on before I was out the door, and it kinda helped me conceal some of all that fleshyness.

After the Lawn party, we headed back to Williamsburg so "Lil' Man" could be the total hipster-dude he was born to be.  I mean look at him...is he not a mini-hipster or what?  He's gonna break some serious hearts when he's older.  We went to the free show to see some bands at the waterfront, where "Lil' Man" immediately popped a squat like a regular outdoor concert goer. 

And before too long, I took a cue and popped my own squat.  Then he proceeded to take off his shirt cause it was so freakin hot.  And we had a pretty feisty game of tug-o-war going on from then on out.

Ah Sunday...it was a good day.  I can't believe I've been so tired lately that I couldn't even post this until now though :(  It would've made for such a good Weekend Rewind had I put both Sat. and Sun. together into one post.
Maybe this weekend, considering it's only 1 day away!  I'm living in a haze, this week has flown by and now its almost time to create some more fun for this weekend.  Crazy!

Weekend Rewind: November 6-8th, 2009

Since I am doing nothing of importance but sleeping and resting up this weekend, it's high time I bring you last week's well overdue Weekend Rewind.

Friday: November 6th, 2009-
Started out with an innocent trip to the movie theater after work. I was excited to see the new alien, sci-fi movie "The Fourth Kind" starring Milla Jovovich. Well Holy Shit!!!! Never did I expect to sit through a movie full of documented footage and audio of actual alien abduction(s).
I was wrought with agony for this woman, as well as on the edge of my seat with my hair standing on end--I have never been more frightened by a movie than this. I could not even find the words to describe how unnerved and shaken I was by the very VERY disturbing footage I had just witnessed.

Needless to say, I've now become a little freaked out by my insane owl collection and the fact that I've woken every night this week around 3:30am (you must see the movie to feel my unease).

Side Note: Since last Friday, I've managed to do some research to which I've found many attacks on this movie and it's authenticity.  To a point, it's made me rest a bit easier knowing that there is a good chance the footage is a hoax.  However, it still does not negate my belief in aliens, and the existence of life elsewhere.  But can someone explain what the heck is goin' on in Nome, Alaska already???

Afterwards, we headed over to a "new-ish" bar/club called Carnival.

To make the evening even more eventful, it turned out there was a movie screening in progress at Carnival.  Shortly after our arrival, the screening let out, and those VIP types came out to mingle and play w/the rest of the commoners.

And that's when Bridget and Jason took on Christopher McDonald at the spray gun game.

Jason kicked his ass BIG TIME!

Another friend talked a bit about prizes with Marty McFly's mom--uh, I mean Lea Thompson.

And BF had the pleasure of spotting this girl, whoever she is???? (J/K guys, of course I know who she is)

By midnight I was feeling insanely tired.  We ended w/a diner dinner and a cab ride home.  And then I passed out, and passed out hard.

Saturday: November 7th, 2009-

I snoozed for well over 12 hours Friday into Saturday.  I woke up sometime around 1:00pm in the afternoon!  Wow, maybe I had a hectic week and just didn't realize it...or maybe there was something else deep at work taking over my body??? hmmmm, aliens?

When I finally woke up and started my day, I really just wanted to do a little shopping at Atlantic Center near my house. (Lots of coupons to lots of the stores there, so shop till you drop!  Yeah!!!)  

I also felt like trying out one of my summer outfits for Fall.  I was not sure how well a cotton skirt would read w/a November appropriate wardrobe, but when out with no one but BF, why not give something different a try?

Of course, who am I to go without a wardrobe issue of some sort?  This time, the skirt kept catching on the tights--even though I WAS wearing a slip.  But then the skirt would work it's way up higher and the edge of the slip would peek out.  Aargh!   

Whatever, I just kept my coat on the entire time I was shopping and no one was any wiser.

And shopping!  ooooh, I hadn't been shopping in so long really, considering I grounded myself from unnecessary purchases throughout October.  So I kinda went a little "KAR-A-ZEE!", but with the coupons I actually saved over 50% on everything I purchased!  Yeah, maybe I picked up 7 shower gels at Bath and Body Works, maybe I bought some new things at Victoria's Secret, maybe I found a cute $7.99 skirt at Marshall's, and maybe I bought some spa foot stuff at Target--so be it!

Finished the evening with Wings at BW3's and Saturday Night Live on the boob tube!  Then I passed out, dead to the world--for no good reason at all.

Sunday: November 8th, 2009-

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN CONCERT DAY!!!!  

Oh how I'd been waiting for this day.....

My entire wardrobe that day was based around going to THEE concert.  I payed a little tribute to 'Born in the USA', or so I led myself to believe that's what my outfit was derived from.

So I teased my hair a little moreso than usual, put a hankie in my back pocket, and threw on the American Flag tee.  I mean if ever there's a time to wear an American Flag (other than the 4th of July), a trashy see-thru crop top, and big hair--it's a ROCK CONCERT!  And my boy Bruce, he's well worth my effort!

Oh, but of course this is not exactly how I went out of the house.  While the temps were quite mild last Sunday, I still needed a jacket of some sort.  I chose the blazer I snagged a while back in the Boys' dept. at Target....yeah that works.

Wearing:

But, to my disappointment, 

The Boss never played "Thunder Road". 

Instead, this tour consists of them playing a different album in its entirety each night.  My night was "The River" , while not bad, I couldn't help but feel I was missing out on a lot of the other songs I would've liked to hear.

But you know what?  It doesn't matter.....it was a great concert; or the first hour of it.  I don't know what the rest was like; I had to leave early.

Because around 9:30pm on Sunday November 8th is when good ol' Swine Flu rolled into Nickie-Town.

And then began the sickest week of my life (not counting when I had mono for 3months when I was 19)

(And now I can't help but wonder if this was why I was sleeping so much the entire weekend?  And when and where did I pick this gross thing up?  Maybe shopping?  Maybe the movies?  God only knows)
