Style Crush: Vidal Sassoon's Amazing 'dos...of course

If there's one man out there who's style...hair style that is, I crush on-well it would be none other than 

Mr. Vidal Sassoon!

He simply is THEE MASTER OF THE SCISSORS.

My friend Cristina (who coincidentally also happens to be my hairstylist extraordinaire) and I simply cannot wait to see this documentary on Vidal.  Lucky for us we live in the big city where as this movie is only playing in the big city(ies)--sorry folks, the rest of you will just have to wait for the DVD to salivate over the lustworthy locks.

Now if you're questioning why I think he's Style Crush worthy-lets review:

He is credited for giving us one of the most classic styles around, and providing us many variations on it as well, the legendary BOB!

He ever so skillfully took his shears to Mary Quant's noggin,

He shocked the world by snipping off Mia Farrow's locks during "Rosemary's Baby", 

giving her a pixie I still envy to this day,

He took our fave little british model, Twiggy, and made her soooooo darn gamine and cute.

Pretty much anyone he got his hands on was given a whole new personality, a whole new life, a whole new attitude, just with the skill he possessed with a pair of scissors.

There's such a sleek sophistication to a Sassoon style, no one can come close to ever outdoing him!

He's a master, and I covet his cuts....I will forever have style envy as I long to be cool enough to someday get one of my own

(actually, I had a Sassoon influenced cut my first week in NYC, it was my first NY haircut ever...but sadly, it was not nearly anything like I wish it could have been...but then again, no one but the man himself can really give me what I want.  And alas, we know Vidal will never touch these locks of mine...I cry cry cry)

Ok so after I see the movie, hopefully next week cause I think its only in NYC theaters for 2wks then its gone gone gone, I'll give you a little recap, a little review of sorts and tell you what I think.

Weekend Rewind: June 19-20th, 2010

A quick lil' Weekend Rewind for you all--just outfits this time around, no picture taking to be had this weekend.  Not to say I didn't have a fun weekend, I was just on the go a lot, no time to stop and snap shots, especially not outside.  Sorry, maybe next time.

Saturday-June 19, 2010:

Slept through my 10:00am alarm maybe because I went out to The Bellhouse on Friday to meet up with Mel and our lil' blogger buddy from Nashville, AlysonIsNeat.  Maybe it's just because I was tired, maybe it was a whole lotta reasons...a whole lotta maybes.
None the less, I already had this outfit planned in my mind from the day before, so I threw it on in a jiffy--phew, because I had to take 3 trains to get to my destination and I was really afraid of being mega-late.  It really helped that I knew I wanted to wear this for my Saturday hair appointment on the Upper West Side.  (Now for the laugh-worthy part: My hair appt. wasn't until 2pm, so why am I worried about being late with an alarm set for 10:00am.  I promise I do not really need 4 hours to get ready).

I imagine you've all dressed the part before, for the area you're going to visit, no?  I don't know why, but anything on the Upper skirts of Manhattan always makes me feel like doing it up a little more classy, a little more put-together if you will.
And a hair appointment at an Aveda Salon is no reason to look like a slob, right?  RIGHT.  That's "classy" stuff I tell ya.

The shorts have Gold buttons, sailor-style, on a front panel--only now do I realize that they're not visible since my shirt seems to be covering them.  I'm just throwing out that tid-bit of info because it dictated my jewelry decision for the day.  Gold buttons=Gold Jewelry, or mostly.

I chose my current favorite: the one from Clydesrebirth's ebay score (she won it for me then I bought it from her...yippee).  I think I mention it last week; but yeah its my current obsession in the treasure trove known as my owl collection.  I like him, I think he hangs on the perfect length of a chain.

Sunday-June 20, 2010:

Today I spent with myself.  I used the late morning/early afternoon organizing my shelves.  (still unpacking a bit, figuring out space, and rearranging).  I've gotten most everything unpacked, just gotta bring out the sewing machine and serger, put them in their new little designated areas of my sewing station/desk, and BAM!  I'm officially done unpacking.  Next up, locating the ladder I used last week so I can attempt to lift things over my head and into the storage area (note to self: this will not be easy because you're a lazy bum that never works out and has no upper body strength whatsoever; lest you have forgotten this silly!)

I then showered, did my new hair (I like having freshly trimmed hair, don't you?)-it looks like it did about 2 months ago at this time, so don't think it's a brand new style--its not. And again, I already had this outfit planned in my head from the week before.  I kinda was blessed this weekend in that I already knew the two outfits I would wear for the weekend.  Funny, both are palates of gray...then again a good majority of my wardrobe is based around Black, White, and Gray--its a winning color scheme, what can I say?
After my daily "get-ready" routine went down, I was out the door.  I treated myself to a mani/pedi of hot pink goodness at my new nail place called "Pretty Hot Nail".  I just like the name!  It's hilarious.
There's 3 nail places within 1-2 doors of my new location, but I stick with Pretty Hot Nail because the lady was so nice to me the first time I was in there, and now this is the second time and she remembered me and every little tidbit of my nail preferences.  Maybe its the snaggle nail on my right 3rd toe that makes her remember me because I refuse to have it cut, file only please (damn shoes I wear, it's ruined my 3rd toenail on my right foot because the toe is too long for most shoes, and it hurts sometimes....GROSS right?  sorry, I hate feet too!  It doesn't help that my toes are the length of a 12yr old's fingers...ok exaggeration but they're pretty freakin creepily long.  And I have GIANT big toes to top it all off).  Anyway, yeah...so Pretty Hot Nail.  I'll tell you what's pretty hot--getting a mani/pedi for $16!!!!  Most places here are already pretty cheap compared to where I grew up, but on the weekends most places here will also up their price.  Oh no, not Pretty Hot Nail--and if they are "upping" the price, well I didn't notice, I'll take their price!

Daily Wear: + an upcoming haircut

Today was just like every other day, I just happened to wear a dress. No reason really, other than I wanted to give the jeans a rest and mix up the routine a bit.

Oh, and I missed my Bi-Monthly laundry chore last weekend since I was out of town-so its putting a damper on my wardrobe; some serious laundry time is in great need.

The weather is fickle, I never know how layered up I need to be or vice versa.

After putting on the dress I realized I had no spring topper that worked with the proportions and swing of the dress. Yep, had to go with a Fall item again--why don't I just rotate my closet already so I don't even have these fall items at my fingertips? It would really help out with my wardrobe conundrums--I mean if it wasn't readily available, then I'd just have to go coatless, thus saving myself a good 5min. that I usually waste trying on a million of my outerwear items.

I'm planning a good, full blown, closet rotation this weekend; fingers crossed I stop wearing my fall stuff already!

(Oh but that just means more stuff on Swappy Seconds; I'm planning on lots of dresses, and before long i'm going to put up some of my treasured vintage frocks I bought when I was on vacation in LA a few years ago--I just have to start parting with some of my stuff already...so yeah, check out Swappy Seconds sometime in the next 2 weeks for new items up for swaps)

A new haircut!

I know, I know....didn't I just get a trim and stuff about 3 weeks ago?

Yes, I did.

But this is a special circumstance--you see, my old college friend is moving to NYC from Orange County. She's a wonderful stylist, trained thru the very awesome Aveda Institute--well she's got a final interview at a salon on the Upper West Side next Wednesday; in order to conduct said interview, she's gotta bring a hair model and show them that she can do any sort of cut and color (they're asking for highlights preferably).

So in comes me...woot woot--I get any new hairstyle and any sort of dye job I want.

(I'm going with the highlights, maybe some lowlights too, but major peek-a-boo blonde pieces sticking out from my layers.)

So my dear readers--any suggestions on the style? What do you want to see?

I'm up for almost anything, but it did take way too long (we're talking 3 years!) to grow out my hair from my chin to my shoulders for me to consider anything short-short.

Right now I'm opting toward a really rocker-ish shag--after this I'm off to look at hairstyles on the internet until I find the exact shag I shall covet.

But until then, if you've got something in mind-please share your thoughts!

Yeah, I'm almost certain I'm just not really into this hairstyle I've got going on now...its just very "BLAH". BRING ON THE SCISSORS!

Daily Wear: Deja Vu

It's a case of deja vu?

Nope, I really did wear this skirt like 2 wks ago (see?)--along with keeping the outfit about 95% the same. Sometimes a girl has no time to be creative.

To make it slightly different this time around, I changed up the top portion from last time, but kept the same color palatte.

This time I paired a lightweight, sheer turtleneck with a slouchy-fit tencel cardi.

My "creativity" comes in with the tying of the cardigan. I felt the front knot not only gave it a much needed fitted shape to my bodice (considering this is a way to balance out the full skirt) and it also lent itself to having a bit of a ballerina inspired look.

(or am I just completely dillusional on that last part?)

Now I understand I lured a lot of you in tonight with yesterday's mention of a new haircut. Sorry to let you down, nothing drastic took place.

It looks the same, just like this outfit, maybe 95% the same. So much so that you probably can't even tell a "new haircut" is at hand, can you?

I'll tell you what I did.

I went in there after work and said, "I want this hairstyle, specifically the piece-y bang, the rest you can leave as it is-just a trim on the split ends please. Oh...and I'll take a few little short layer pieces here and there at eye level."

Now I also have to tell you, these pictures are from yesterday. My stylist does not put any product in my hair, and that's fine--I think we both prefer him to just blowdry it so I don't catch pneumonia and then we'll both be on our merry ways.

I however, on a daily basis, put about 3-5 products in my hair. Therefore, the texture and look of my hair is always much different than what I leave the salon with.

So what you see here is not exactly an accurate depiction of what I have managed to achieve today. You'll see it soon enough, I tend to gunk it up and make it much more piece-y and "edgy" shall I say? My stylist tends to go a more classic route opting for curled under edges, shine, and flat hair. (again this probably goes back to the fact that he never puts any product in it)

I am also not extremely thrilled with it at the moment--ask me again next week. I've come to know my hair quite well-it takes nearly 1 week after the cut to get it to be what I want.

So let's say by next Thursday its going to be what I intended.

Now its just kinda, "eh".

And there you have it...all that hair hoopla I promised, and you only get this!

Ok, now I'm so excited about what I came across today...it makes me smile, it makes me proud, it makes me super giddy--and completely ready for summertime.

SewMeSomeLove (she's come to be like a little sister after all these years of knowing her) is working on putting together a portfolio. I've completely recruited her as my summer intern

and hopefully one day my full-blown assistant!

(lucky girl...hahaha-yes, I'm tooting my own horn. Toot-Toot)

And she's hinted at having a Giveaway on her blog very, very soon. All we have to do is help her reach 20 followers--not too hard, just follower her and before we know it she'll be having her giveaway (oh I'm soooooooo entering! Did you see those beautiful rings--talented I tell you!)

Weekend Rewind: November 28th-29th, 2009

Yea! The Weekend,

Saturday: November 28, 2009--

I finally had that hair appointment I had been talking about for a while.  Thank Goodness!

Just look at my haphazard self, the haggard look in my face, and the overgrown bang...not to mention the microscopic split ends that were driving me crazy!

Now, when I say this--it might all be in my head, but seriously--lately I was feeling so intensely bitchy looking, very unapproachable, and very much my age.  And I attribute this to the HAIR.  I think it was just doing something to my appearance that made me look like a "not so nice" person.  (Although I will admit, I usually like it that way--the less approachable I appear, the less annoyed with others I have to be).

I chose to go with a very basic, all-American getup for the day.  Knowing I would be doing some more shopping and jaunting around the city after the hair appt. I figured a plain-white-tee would be the perfect backdrop for a shiny new 'do.

--The purse, I've been dying to get a black Across-Body bag for schlepping around on the weekends.  And alas, I purchased one on my "after work Black Friday shopping excursion"--

After the hair appointment, I found myself in Soho (mainly because I thought I was meeting BF at the Best Buy there later in the day) where I continued on with some weekend shopping.

Side Note: I found a great bandage skirt at Express.  It's Black and very what I was looking for!

(I had a coupon/reward for $10 off...thankfully a jackass manager rang me up.  Being that he was too busy worrying and concerning himself with who was going to help him on registers, he did not realize he swiped the $10 reward TWICE!  Yea--I saved $20, SCORE FOR ME-LOSS FOR EXPRESS!  I'm sure they'll get over it.)

And I took a moment in the dressing room to snap a shot of my new hair!  (gone is the assymetry, back to my old look of heavy bang, and two matching sides--or as much as possible at this growing out state I'm experiencing)

Honestly, again maybe in my head, but I look so much more refreshed, nicer, and dare I jinx it--but perhaps a year or two younger? (could  this my first mid-life crisis I'm going through?)

Back to shopping...

Turns out I was NOT supposed to meet BF at the Soho Best Buy.  WHOOPS!

So upwards I trekked to meet him at another Best Buy.  (Remember folks--he kept me from posting all last week because he was researching flat screens.  Well he purchased one and needed help carrying it.)

At Best Buy, not only did we purchase a tv, but I was a lucky girlfriend who snagged (on BF's wallet)

a new Wii game!

Side Note: You know what I'll be doing in my free time for the next 1-2weeks

And, a LAN ADAPTER so I can do things on the internet via the Wii (like showing BF the blog-reading capabilities on the new tv at 1:00am)

If you've got one kind ounce in your soul--you'll forgive my pajama ensemble and late night make-up and hairdo mistakes.  

Side Note: this is SOOOOO a typical "Christmas at Nickie's house" photo--which indeed it felt like with all of BF's tech purchases, I mean...who doesn't love an X-mas in November?

Sunday: November 29, 2009--

Laundry Day....Boo!  I skipped out on it last weekend though, so I had an overly large amount of clothing needing a good wash.  I hate when I wait 3wks to do laundry, it's the pits!

And that's also about the time where I stare blankly into my closet and utter those familiar words,

"I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR"

And yeah--not quite sure what I chose to wear today, a total mish-mash of nonsense for sure!

BF also set out to purchase more items all revolving around his new tv.  Soooo, I came home and helped him put together the new stand.  It cleaned up clutter, hid some ugly wires, and overall just made our space a bit more livable--Thank Goodness!

So.....lots of shopping, lots of Wii fun, and a new haircut....that was my weekend.

Now excuse me, I'm in desperate NEED of a Mario Bros. FIX before I go to bed.

HAIR

Wait...didn't I mention getting my hair trimmed like 2-3weeks ago?

What happened?

Oh yes, I got sick, time got the best of me, and my hair started behaving--therefore I simply forgot to make an appointment

Until, ( picture: mini-freakout) I saw Steve (the stylist) on the street corner in passing.

And then I realized

"YIKES--he just saw my deadly split ends!"

So, with this picture in tow, I will be making my way over to him sometime next week

(probably after turkey day).

While I know my hair is still asymmetrical, and I'm missing a huge chunk of it on my right side; I'm convinced he can get it to look like this, or at least set it up so it grows right into place.

I mean really, it's just adding some textured layers to the left side, blending in the shorter right side, and cutting my bangs into this...and I'll be good to go.

I do love layers and a whole lotta texture--that's my tried and true look.

Daily Wear:

Ever had one of those days?  By the time you're walking down the street you realize everything about your outfit is going to drive you crazy?

As I made my way the 1/2 block from the front door to the subway entrance, discomfort had completely set in.  However, being 3 minutes late leaving my house (I have a very strict routine that puts me to work by 9am, throw it off and I throw off my life)means no time to go back and take care of issues.

Soooo.....

*I spent all day dealing with a dress that fits larger than it did last year at this time--so I was drowning in it, mostly in the sleeves. 

*I spent all day tugging up my leggings--they felt like slipping down around hip level everytime I took a step.  

*And, the worst of all, the slipping leggings, managed to aid in my skivvies contastly slipping too!  

Sorry maybe a little "TMI"--but yeah, all the slippage and the excess of dress--just not my day!

On another note, my asymmetrical cut is on it's way out...just FYI.  I'm done!  

I need a trim, but I'm over the upkeep of having one short side.  So wish me luck as I enter the long task of growing it out and getting back to symmetry.

(I've already got the picture in my hands--it's from the Sebastian Haircare ads, the one with Mickey Green.  I'm convinced for now, the shorter side can be worked into her messy 'do.  Plus I swear Steve--the stylist--is a magician!)

I think I'll go sometime next week.   Yep, that's the plan--get these little split ends outta here and let the growing begin!

It's been several days, where have I been???

Well.....Thursday I got my hair trimmed--FINALLY!  No more overgrown side bangs and fried layers.  I can see and my hair is healthy again :)

Friday I went to work.  It was rainy all day--Damn you Hurricane Danny!  The hair goes back to looking a bit crazy.

Since rain was in the forecast, I wanted to dress comfy in something that would remain casual and cool looking even though I turn into a rag-a-muffin mess.  

From work I went to the movies

-Inglorious Basterds was the flick of choice-WONDERFUL!  Brad Pitt just placed himself back on top of my fave actor list (yes, I've had an ongoing crush along with everyone else, since I was in 7th grade and saw him in Thelma and Louise)

And this morning (Saturday) was greeted with more rain and errands I just simply could put off no longer.  I knew if I got up and showered it would become a whole day ordeal of me getting ready (I dilly-dally around FOREVER in front of the mirror before I leave the house on weekends), so I threw on my trusty cap (hardly ever do I go for something like this, so not me), put on some boots to sashay past the rain, and got my stuff done.

I am now off to the shower to get my weekend started--tonight is my best fashion school pal's last weekend as a single lady!  Next weekend her fiance makes an honest woman of her!  I guess you could say it's a bit of a "Girls night out"/very informal bachlorette party.

Hmmm.....for dinner, drinks, then go knows what--dancing probably, should I go with a cute cocktail type dress, or something casual?  What and whom do I want to be tonight?

I used to just buy and buy, tons of JUNK.

Most of it would end up in the back of my closet, some never even worn...then I'd find it a year later when I cleaned, and of course there was always a few pieces still with tags attached.

There's no need for that; of course it's fine to pick up some quickie, cheapie finds every so often.  But I had a HUGE problem, buying something almost every other day.  

Not to say I've since lost this problem, it's just a little more under control.  This past switch-out of my Fall clothes to Spring/Summer was my awakening to the whole issue.

I saw all these items that I would never wear, that I've hung on to for far too long.  Those are now in 3 large bags ready to go to the thrift store, or the curb-depending on my mood when I finally get rid of the bags.  Either way, someone will make good use of it.

In regard to the huge pile of clothes I did keep, those are getting a whole new life.  I'm trying to rework, restyle, just breathe new life into old forgotten pieces.  Even if they were just a few dollars, if I kept it, I must wear it.

This whole idea of "shopping my closet" is becoming quite fun.  I'm challenging myself to make use of the items I kept.  It's keeping me from spending as much as I would've in the past during the giddy time that comes right before summer.  Instead, I'm cutting up old jeans, turning skirts into tunics, throwing belts around this, tucking that, mixing it up.  And it seems to keep me happy for now.  I'm kinda having fun with it actually.

Although, when I pulled these boots out of my closet today, I really really really got it stuck in my head that I NEED to get back to Ohio and take a little thrift-store shopping trip.  Oh man, Ohio thrift stores are the best (Village Discount Outlet!).   It's probably a good thing that I have no near future trip to Ohio planned, because I have no control, no matter how happy I am redoing the items in my closet instead of spending, the thrift-store is so freakin cheap that I just buy whatever strikes my fancy.  I've found so many good things there over the years...most will make an appearance in this blog at some point in time.

I didn't really wear this outfit in the photos....I don't know what I think about the skirt; it should probably go in one of those 3 bags in the corner of my apartment.  I could probably say, "goodbye" and never really miss it.  And all this while I kept the skirt, I've actually never worn it-and it's probably about 4yrs old.  Now to me, it's looking kinda outdated with those nasty "worn" sections.  Ugh, reminds me of WHISKERS on all the juniors jeans circa 2003.  (oh man, flashback to my internship).

Oh, and I trimmed my own hair today.  No big deal, I always trimmed my bangs between haircuts, this time it was a bit different.  I was a little nervous considering I haven't trimmed up short hair in about 5years....but I'm confident with the snips I made.  Ok, so I do not have short hair, I just like to believe my right side is a bit pixie-ish....not sure that it really even is.  I'm sometimes dillusional.

Anyhow, I'll see my successful trim, or my mishap with scissors tomorrow morning when I have a freshly washed head of hair.  Fingers crossed it will look OK.

New Haircut

I finally did it, chopped off the right side of my hair.  I love it!!!!
